Natural Elements of Yoga Workshop

Posted · Add Comment

We are not separate from nature; we are all connected.

This workshop is a fun and light-hearted journey using the natural elements of yoga: Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Space (Ether).  It aims to help you bring an equilibrium, steadiness and balance to your life by understanding the relationship between you and the natural world.

As we have all learnt over the past few years, connecting to nature is key to supporting your mental health and wellbeing. The five natural elements are used in yoga all the time, even if you don’t realise it.  In this workshop, we will play with yoga shapes, breathing practices, meditation and your senses, to draw the qualities of nature into your practice.

EARTH: calm, grounded, safe, reliable

The Earth element forms the stable, strong foundation of your yoga practice. Feeling the connection of your body to the natural earth (or your yoga mat) can help you feel grounded, rooted and supported: both physically and emotionally. This connection to the earth element can be as simple as noticing your feet and toes connected to the floor, or going for a walk and noticing nature all around you. In yoga the Earth becomes your anchor, so we will use yoga shapes to steady both your mind, body and nervous system to experience a sense of grounding and stability.

FIRE: cleansing, transformational, confidence, determination

The Fire element is sometimes considered to be one of the most formidable elements; the heat generated can help cleanse your body and bring about a sense of transformation. We will be using warming, flowing vinyasa sequences to increase fire in the body to help you stay in the present moment, whilst practising both supine and standing balances to help increase your self-confidence, focus and determination.

WATER:  fluidity, flexibility, fun, creativity

The Water element links beautifully with flowing Vinyasa Flow yoga, offering the opportunity for effortless movement and fluidity. Water can be calming with gentle energy like a trickling stream, or have strong and powerful energy like the sea.  This fluid water element can encourage us to listen to our body, soften and release any stored tension, and go with the flow, allowing us to be more accepting of change and move towards a more instinctive way of moving your body.

AIR: gentle, spacious, light, movement

No surprise to discover that breathing practices have the strongest link to the Air element. A myriad of breathing techniques can be used to move air effectively, efficiently and calmly around your body. Think how powerful the wind can be: not only strong and destructive, but also cooling and calming. Learning to control your breath can therefore be a powerful tool in aiding feelings of peace, calm and joy, whilst having a positive balancing effect on our entire being.

SPACE : expansive, unrestricted. spaciousness, openness, subtle

The element of Space connects strongly to Meditation and the idea that the space inside of us is connected to the limitlessness space outside. We can literally move into this space as we physically flow through different postures, or we can look to the vastness within ourselves during meditation. Space can literally be found within our physical bodies: lungs, nostrils, stomach, all of which can be utilised within yoga.

The element of Space holds all the other elements in balance, as they all exist within this space. Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind, and it is in this element where we can find this stillness.
